Guidelines & Expectations

Welcome to the new school year.  I am looking forward to a year filled with excitement and creativity.  I encourage each student to explore the opportunity to expand his/her learning skills and reach his/her highest potential.  Let’s make this a great year!

Classroom Rules chosen by the students:

Be respectful.

Be responsible.

Follow the social contract.

READING EXPECTATIONS:

I will conference with each student to set their reading goal each nine weeks. Students will read 30 minutes every day during school time. There will also be a focus on nonfiction.  Students should be reading at least 15-20 minutes outside of school. Each student should ALWAYS have their book with them.

Writing:

We will be writing almost every day in one form or another.  We will continuously go through the writing process with mini-lessons along the way to build skills.  Students will write with a specific audience in mind, write many drafts, edit and revise and write to publish.  Assignments will range from poetry to informational writing.  There will be long and short research projects to build their writing skills for high school and college.

Homework:

There is a limited amount of homework given to students; however, if a student is absent or cannot complete an assignment in class by the deadline, he/she will be asked to complete it for homework.  There will be times when I ask students to work on something at home (research, bringing supplies, etc.) for a lesson we will be working on in class.  It is my expectation that the student will be prepared with those materials for the next class.  I encourage the students and parent to visit my website page on a weekly basis to find out what our plans will be for the week.

Absences:

I ask that all students who are absent visit with me before or after school to find out about missing work.  It is very difficult for me to stop in the middle of a lesson or to prolong the start of a new class to go over assignments with a student who has been absent.  I encourage any student to come visit with me if he/she is absent, needs more time to work on an assignment, and/or needs extra help.

Late Work:

Assignments are expected on the due date during the class period.  Students are expected to hand in assignments, even if they are late.  Depending on the assignment, I will take off 2-10 points per day.  If there is a specific situation, I may deal with that individually.  Students will be asked to call his/her parent(s) if missing assignments become a problem.

Communication:

Please feel free to contact me with any concerns regarding your student.  Email is usually the easiest way to contact me, but if you would like to call, I will get back with you as soon as possible.  My plan period is from 1:16 - 2:01.

  • Grades will be updated on PowerSchool at least every two weeks
  • Check my Website (on the school web site) every Monday morning for our weekly schedule
  • Please call the school if you need to set up a personal conference
  • Email:  mitchela@usd385.org
